"AMATEURS!!!"

June 23, 2019

A quick blog this week.

One about amateurism.

One about keeping it amateur.

Not about keeping it average.

Quite the opposite.

One about releasing yourself from the ties of something you have become proficient at and flinging yourself into some new activity.

Some craft or skill with which you are unfamiliar.

To keep it fresh.

To keep your YOU real.

To continue the learning process.

Stay interested.

But not only that.

Going back to square one means making things up. Experimenting.

Making mistakes.

Trying new things out which you would never have dreamt of by sticking to one medium.

You are not being paid for it so have a flipping field day.

It's up to you which way to take it.

Last year I turned to making short films. Some stop motion. Some live action. Some I even played a role in. All amateur. All exciting to make. And all an education for me about me. About VOICE.

I read this week that if you speak about what you love you will find your voice. This love includes what you are passionate about. What you are passionately for and against. Here you find your voice.

Whether you pick up a pen, a paint brush, a lump of clay, a camera or a tuba, if you are a creative person you will figure out a way of saying what you want to say with these items. No Items? Sing. Dance. Levitate.

Curator and friend Hagai Segev made visible to me the 'voice' that had been whispering to me under the surface of everything I have done in the last five years.

I see myself more clearly in those works now and am finding it much easier to put all of myself into each of my latest pieces.

Currently I am editing a novel I have written which is taking all of my focus at the moment. Hence the three-weekly instead of fortnightly blogs these past few months. I only got so many words....

Anyway, on Friday night I was reminded of my recent foray into directing as I had one of my amateur short films shown at Bio Oko cinema for the Some Like it Short film festival (I LOVE these guys!!). This festival is such a great and unique platform for amateur film makers to cut their teeth and share their work will fellow film enthusiasts. There is a true sense of camaraderie, support and light-hearted playfulness at these events. Long may they last!  My film was in the final 10 selection. The film included three major elements of my 'voice'.

  1.  My voice! The film is a video for a song I wrote and sang.

  2.  My passionate disdain of organised religion. Always a fun topic.

  3.  My love of collage, randomness, Dadaism, Xmas and Harold Pinter.

Julia Druelle's short short film which deservedly won was a truly well made film which I most certainly would have voted for if I hadn't voted for my own.

Winners :-)

🐻 Golden Honey Bear of the best movie: Julia Druelle for "Dé raisons du mariage"

🦁 Golden Lion Bar of the best acting: Patrice and Anne Druelle, Julia's parents, for "Dé-raisons du mariage"

☢️ Weird golden stuff of the most "Uncertain Regard": Bára Mišíková and Petr Vancura for "Kleopatra Démantů"

When the editing is done and the novel complete I will return to the studio in full force having learnt an incredible amount by stepping away and finding out exactly what it is like to structure a readable novel.

Comprehensibility is the word of the month and that applies to more than just the book.

Get stuck in one mode and you can lose your perspective. Focus means nothing if you don't have more than one vantage point to begin with.
